Why I Almost Stopped Believing in God

I never felt like God had forsaken me. That wasn’t the issue. But I did reach a place in prison where I questioned if He was even real.

It wasn’t because of something that happened between me and God. It was what happened between me and people who claimed to know Him. I went to folks who professed to be Christians—who said they loved God—and I asked them for help. But they couldn’t help me. Or they wouldn’t. That made me start thinking: maybe this Christianity thing isn’t real. Maybe it’s just a hoax.

That’s where my doubt came in.

But here’s what I learned from that: don’t base God’s reality on the actions of people who claim to know Him. A lot of folks out here saying they know God really don’t. They don’t know Him for real. And if you judge God based on their behavior, you’re going to end up lost, disappointed, and disconnected.

So what do you do when you feel forgotten by God?

1. Stop Looking at People as Proof of God

People will fail you. Period. Even good people. Even people in church. If you’re measuring the reality of God by how people treat you, then your foundation’s already cracked. I had to stop doing that. I had to stop saying, “Well, if these people can’t help me, maybe God’s not real.” That’s not how it works.

2. Take Responsibility for Your Own Growth

This goes back to what I said before—you have to take ownership of your spiritual walk. Your healing, your deliverance, your growth—it starts with you choosing to chase after God, no matter what others do. I had to take responsibility for my own breakthrough.

God didn’t forget me. I just had to stop expecting everybody else to be the evidence of Him.

3. Cry Out for Yourself

One of the scriptures that helped me later on was Psalm 107:19–20:

“Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and He saveth them out of their distresses. He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

That part—“they cry unto the Lord in their trouble”—that’s real. When you feel like you’ve been forgotten, you gotta cry out. Not to people. Not to the system. To God. And He will answer. But you have to seek Him for yourself.

I came out of that place of doubt by doing just that—seeking Him for myself. And what I found was this: God is real. He’s good. He’s present. And He hadn’t forgotten me at all.

So if you're in that place right now, wondering where God is—don’t give up. Don’t walk away. He hasn’t forgotten you. He’s just waiting for you to come to Him directly. And when you do, He’ll show you who He is for real.
